‘piccolo cane’ would be the easiest, most literal way to say it.

Or you may say ‘cacciune’, though that’s somewhat slang and may vary by dialect of Italian.

‘cucciolo’ means something more like puppy.

Or in the tradition of dolce>dolcissima & bene>benissimo, add some endearment to it by calling it canissimo

(I’m not a native speaker, but I did live in Italy for 4 months and am admittedly a bit less than fluent)
