Does anyone know if “The Invisible Fence” for dogs actually works? What can you tell me about it?
Question by mariajones1978: Does anyone know if “The Invisible Fence” for dogs actually works? What can you tell me about it?
My husband and I just moved into a house with a chain link fence. There are a few places in the perimeter where our dogs can squeeze through, crawl under or otherwise get out of the yard. We are looking for a cheap alternative to having a wooden privacy fence constructed and want to know if invidible fences work.
Can our dogs be injured by the electric shock? Since our dogs are all under 25 pounds, will the system work for them?
We have a lot of questions and any advice from actual users, former or current, of the product will be much appreciated.
Thank you!

The shock is varied according to the size/weight of the dog and does not ever “hurt” it. They’re even ineffective on larger breeds.
The company we used actually only used electricity for the first two weeks. Every time we let the dog out, he wore a collar that would cause the shock when he stepped over the boundaries. Operant conditioning teaches him not to cross the line again after the two weeks, not actual electric shocks. I don’t know if all companies do that though.

When I was looking into invisible fencing I found a company that actually comes out and tests your dog. I didn’t go completely through with all of it so I am not sure how they preform the tests, but. They say they check the temperament, because they don’t work on every dog. Some dogs have a higher pain threshold and prey drive, ect. They said that if they install the fence they guarantee it to work for you. The estimate and such was free. Maybe look around for a similar company.
Pros – won’t mess up the look of your property
Can hurt dog
Cons – Can be as expensive as a normal fence
BIGGEST CON –
I have several friends who have invisible fences who lost their dogs because i.f.’s may keep them in, but they don’t keep agressive dogs wandering the neighborhood or a kid who doesn’t know not to stick his face in your dogs face or a dog thief out.
If you already have a chain link fence, or want to put up a wooden fence and want to combine it with a i.f., then it would be good, but not alone.
I also do not recommend them for scent hounds like beagles as the amount of pain will not matter when they smell something good.
I have a small dog, about 20 pounds, and the invisible fence works great. They really only get shocked a few times during training. That’s because a) they learn their boundaries and b) whenever they get close to the “fence” the collar makes a small beeping noise, which they come to associate with pain, so they don’t go further. My dog is so well trained she doesn’t even wear the collar anymore, but she still stays on our property. We’ve trained her to think it’s ok to cross the fence when we pick her up for walks (obviously we take off the collar). Good luck!
My friend recentley bought a 7 week old Male Border Collie. They had the system installed before they got him since alot of there dogs ran in the road even though there house is back in the woods. Bogey, the BC’s name was only about 15-20 pounds or lower when they got him so he was around your dog’s ages. It works. They set out two orange flags where he should not cross and he learned not to go across that. Or it will shock him. But Bogey has learned if he just sits there for a minute, the system will go OFF and he can go past it. They do that because if a dog crossed it, and for some reason got lost it would be horrible if it just kept shocking him/her. So, they do work.
Good Luck and I hoped this helped!!!!
I have actually never had one, but some of my neighbors do. Their dogs I would say are about 25- 30 lbs. so not to big. You just see those dogs frollicing around, and they stay way far away from the fence. If you are worried about it injuring them, then you can always ask a local petshop about some options from someone that really knows. I mean I am just a viewer not an owner.
Well my friend and a neighbor both had one and it didn’t work for either. The dogs just jumped over where it was and kept on going but I am sure they have worked for others.
YES! BUY IT! my aunt has a little dog, like the one on the ceaser dog food box, and boy he loves it! he is able to run free, adn when they get near the perimiter, it gives them a small warning shock, adn if they do go by it, it will diliver a strong, (but safe) shock. It is a wire you lay out ( or bury ) under the ground. It is like a fence, you just cant see it (hence INVISIBLE FENCE) hope this helps! im thinking about getting one for my chihuhua. :P
well i am about to get one and yes i think they do, but mt ant had a jack russel and one day it decided that it didn’t hurt that bad and ran away!!
They do work and they won’t hurt the dog….you pup will soon realize where the boudry is….the collars are adjustable for the sizes of dogs…but they do work…I know several people that have them
